Fall 2014 Calendar

 

The Bing Arts Center presents an array of arts-related and creative community events including Musical, Spoken Word, and small Theatrical Performances. Art-house and other Indie films are screened monthly along with small festivals and special film events. Exhibitions of work by local and regional artists are also regularly scheduled.

Tickets for our Fall 2014 schedule will be available for purchase online the week of 9/15.

First Friday: NEUE

Friday, September 5, 8 p.m.

New England Ukulele Ensemble presents special, unique musical works coupled with skilled musical craftsmanship. Using their unassuming and friendly ukuleles, the group recreates classic, timeless tunes from the 60’s, 70’s, in addition to many more beloved favorites!

All-Ages Rock Show

Saturday, September 6, 8 to 10 p.m.

Spinster, Dérive, and Wishbone Zoe in an all ages-rock show to benefit the Bing Arts Center. Produced by Paul Preston.

Comedy & Hypnosis

Friday, September 12, 8 p.m.

Starring comedy hypnotist Matthew James with comedian Chris Marion and hosted by Shawn Montagna. Matthew James is unlike any other hypnotist you’ve ever witnessed. His show is a modern and fresh approach to this centuries old mystery of the mind. He’ll take you on a hilarious journey of sight and sound!

Something Solar

Friday, September 26, 8 p.m.

Angel Rodriguez on Lead Vocals/Guitar and Rachel Udo on Vocals/Keys are an urban folk-rock duo from South Texas, with a sound that has been called “a breath of fresh air” and “haunting and world-weary.”

In addition to Springfield, their Northeast Tour takes them to Toronto, New York City, New Haven, Providence, and Boston. Lamar Jones, an up-and-coming acoustic soul-writer, will perform the opening set.

Youth Poetry Club

Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Middle school students are invited to come share their writing in a safe community setting. We’ll work with students to develop, revise and edit 5-7 solid poems or essays.

The club will continue in the spring where we’ll explore the variety of ways in which a poem may be brought to life either through performance or publication in a zine, chapbook,
or poetry pop-out book.

A short entertaining thriller by local filmmaker Robert Stock starring AJ Pero (Twisted Sister), Malachy Murray, Kenny Daneyko (New Jersey Devils), Antonio Saillant, Warren Amerman (best use of a toothpick as a prop Oscar nomination), and Raw Leiba.

Director Robert Stock and filmmaker and AIC professor Marty Langford will be available for questions after the show. Unrated, 23 min.

House Concert: Don Bikoff

Friday, October 17, 8 p.m.

Don Bikoff, along with Leo Kottke, John Fahey, etc., was one of the originators of the style currently classified as American Primitive guitar. The original pressings of his cult classic 1968 recording Celestial Explosion have become a highly sought-after collectors item.

He remains a polished performer drawing on a lifetime of experience that is reflected in the richness of his music.

Friday, October 24, 8 p.m.

This five-woman group performs unforgettable songs from the 60’s and 70’s, along with medleys from Sister Act, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and much more! From Motown to Broadway, Classical and A Capella, these talented women sing a variety of genres.

Members are Brenda Jermakian, Karen Drumheller, Jane Garabedian, Janet Parslow and Ellen Harris. They are musicians, music teachers, choir directors, soloists, and members of the Springfield Symphony Chorus, with a passionate love for music they bring to each performance.

Juke Joint Jazz

The jazz quintet from Amherst will make their debut performance in Springfield at the Bing. Juke Joint Jazz plays their own hard-driving, melodic arrangements of the classic
modern jazz repertoire.

Featuring several accomplished soloists with influences ranging from Miles Davis to the Grateful Dead, from Monk to Funk, the band plays an eclectic mix of compositions.

Firmly rooted in classic jazz, their laid-back virtuosity and expert arrangements that sometimes verge on the orchestral. Based in
Los Angeles and New York, New West tours extensively throughout the United States giving concerts and master-classes.

Teatro V!da CD Release

Thursday, November 20, 7 p.m.

Join us in a celebration of Teatro V!da’s first in a series of upcoming poetry and music CD’s. Featured on the debut poetry album are four dynamic young women: Francheska Morales, Eilish Thompson, Narelle Thomas,
and Yolanda Scavron.

Each with their own singular voice and rhythms perform poems about identity, society,
mental health, racism, homophobia, and
media-distorted conceptions of beauty.

Admission includes a signed copy of CD by
the artists following the performance.

Ukulele Christmas Show

New England Ukulele Ensemble (NEUE) will perform seasonal favorites at their Ukulele Christmas Show at the Bing.

NEUE amazes their audiences with the accomplished use of these humble and friendly instruments coupled with uniquely crafted arrangements and spectacular vocal harmonies! In addition to a couple of special guests, a memorable holiday twist will be provided by the MC, well-known regional ventriloquist Mike Lawson with Edgar and Uncle C’mor.

House Concert: Peter Griggs

Friday, December 19, 8 p.m.

Accomplished guitarist Peter Griggs will perform his program Music For An Old English Christmas featuring arrangements of traditional carols, ballads, and folk dances of the British Isles, along with compositions by Elizabethan composers such as John Dowland, William Byrd, and Anthony Holborne.

In addition to guitar, this program includes performances on the laud,
an eleven string folk lute.

Lead by trumpeter Jeremy Turgeon, this talented, high-energy sextet of graduates from Springfield’s Sci-Tech High School returns to the Bing to kick off the New Year in style!

Playing a rare and eclectic repertoire on vintage electric guitars through tube amplifiers, Jamie Balmer and Joseph Ricker as Duo Orfeo are creating their own sound using the finesse, clarity, and focused touch typical of classical musicians. They bring to life a world of sound that is intimate, charming, subtle, and haunting.
